History of Taekwondo

Taekwondo is Korean traditional martial arts and sport. Its origin goes back to 4000 years ago. The Taekwondo motions of the past were to protect oneself against the opponent. Under the necessity to observe wild animals appearance and movement quick motions and instinctive motions of selfdefence were developed and trained.
After all these processes Modern Taekwondo has developed Makki Chagi and Jireugi as basic motions. It was proved through the remains of the threekingdom age that there existed similar martial arts to Taekwondo during the three kingdoms age. The mural painting of ancient tombs of Koguryo kingdom and records of Baekjae kingdom prove the existence of similar martial arts to Taekwondo.
Also another record from Shilla kingdom says that the people practiced selfprotection techniques such as Supakdo. All these martial arts were succeeded into Koryo and Josun kingdom.
Taekwondo was systemized since the foundation of the Korean Taekwondo Association in 1961. It was adopted as an official game of a national athletic meeting in 1963 for the first time. The name of taekwondo was taken officially from the Korean Taekwondo Association. Today Taekwondo has become a world sport with 171 member countries.
